That's Guangzhou takes a look at the best live performances happening this weekend:
Thu, Sept 13: Slowdive @ Mao Livehouse
One of the most highly anticipated tours of the year is finally here. This one hardly needs an introduction as these British pioneers of shoegaze become the second major purveyor of the genre to arrive in China this year. Members of the band toyed around with different forms of music after breaking up in 1995, with bands like Mojave 3, Televise and Monster Movie, before reforming in 2014 and releasing 2017’s long-awaited returning effort, Slowdive.
Thu Sept 13, 8.30pm; RMB260 students, RMB300 presale, RMB350 at the door. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
Sat, Sept 15: Big Wave @ T:union
After a myriad of new releases since the middle of last year, Beijing band Big Wave are on a bit of a roll. Their synthpop sound takes inspiration from old and new proponents of that style of music, with the likes of New Order being a clear inspiration for the band. Head down to T: union this weekend with your favorite dancing shoes in tow for what will certainly be an intoxicating evening of indie-infused electronica.
Sat Sept 15, 8pm; RMB100 presale, RMB120 at the door. T:union. Tickets.
Sat, Sept 15: Olly James @ 020 Club
If you are in need of some EDM this weekend, why not head down to 020 Club to catch one of England’s rising young electronic stars as 24-year-old Olly James comes to town. After previous collaborations with Sash! and MOTI, plus fantastic reworks of hits by Post Malone, Calvin Harris and more, James is a name to look out for. His latest release is a collaboration with Futuristic Polar Bears and MATTN, another in a string of potent club bangers from the Newcastle producer.
Sat Sept 15, 8.30pm. RMB30 students, RMB50 presale, RMB80 at the door. 020 Club. Tickets.
Sat, Sept 15: JahWahZoo @ NT Livehouse
Chengdu reggae collective JahWahZoo bring their tropical vibes down south this weekend. This group of seven talented musicians take inspiration from the Jamaican musical form while also splashing in some of their own flavor with Chinese lyrics. As China’s music industry continues to grow, so too does the appearance of bands affiliated with this niche genre. Catch the band playing tracks from their latest album, Zoo Party, this weekend.
Sat Sept 15, 8.30pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. NT Livehouse. Tickets.
Sun, Sept 16: Eyre Llew @ Zhile Art Space
Zhile Art Space has been quiet over the summer months, but it returns this weekend with not one, but two cracking gigs. Eyre Llew from Nottingham, England take their ambient rock sound to Guangzhou on Sunday night. Their 2017 album Atelo received rave reviews from the likes of Drowned in Sound upon its release. Similar in sound to Bon Iver’s self-titled sophomore effort, Eyre Llew’s tranquil music should be a happy reprieve from the crowded streets outside.
Sun Sept 16, 8pm; RMB100 early bird, RMB180 presale, RMB260 at the door. Zhile Art Space. Tickets.
